WHO WORKS HERE? |
Please use your mouse to find out! EBL comprises a working group of three Ph.D. level scientists, technical staff and MLML graduate students conducting thesis research. Student researchers also provide additional technical support for ongoing funded research projects. Brief biographies for each lab member follow and contain links to their web spaces. Dr. Richard C. Zimmerman is the head of this laboratory group. El Jeffe is an Adjunct Professor and Associate Research Scientist at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. He received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Southern California. Dick has conducted research on coastal marine ecosystem productivity in California, islands of the tropical western Pacific and the Bahamas. His work has produced more than 30 scientific publications, two patents for nontoxic antifouling compounds and three copyrighted software applications. Dr. G. Jason Smith an Associate Research Scientist at MLML, received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Georgia in 1984. He has been working with Dr. Zimmerman since 1987. Jason's general research interests center on the molecular physiology of marine algae. Specific research topics have ranged from coral physiology, investigation of the molecular regulation of nitrogen assimilation, marine algal biotechnology, algal and yeast genetics to biochemical physiology of harmful algal blooms. Additional interests include 3D visualization and modeling of biological structures and Ultimate Frisbee. Dr. Heidi M. Dierssen, EBL's newest member, is an Associate Research Scientist at MLML, received her Ph.D. in "Remote Sensing" from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1999. Heidi's expertise includes remote sensing and optical oceanographic studies of long term dynamics in coastal waters of Antarctica. At MLML she pioneered the use of hyperspectral remote sensing data sets generated by PHILLS imaging sensors for quantification of seagrass habitats in opitcally shallow waters of the Bahamas Banks. Heidi has successfully adapted these algorithms for analysis of SeaWifs images of the same region generating the first bank-wide estimates of seagrass primary production on the Bahamas Banks. As of September 2002, Heidi has moved on to a position down the road at MBARI. Sally K. Wittlinger, is now an Emeritus graduate student in the Phycology lab. Sally successfully defended her thesis in May 2002 and is happily (not to mention warmly!) living and looking for employment in Arizona. CONGRATULATIONS SALLY!! Sherry L. Palacios, a graduate student in the Phycology lab. Sherry has completed her thesis research and is in the midst of data analysis and writing. Nicolas C. Ladizinsky, a graduate student in the Chemical Oceanography Lab. Nicolas has completed his thesis research and is in the midst of data analysis and writing. Claire M. Dominik, a graduate student in the Phycology Lab. Claire has completed her thesis research and is in the midst of data analysis and writing. Last, but certainly not least Aimee M. Bullard, was our research technician but has moved on to CSU Fullerton for advanced degree work. |
